Collagen has taken the beauty and health industry by a storm – from being used in beauty and skincare routines to being made into supplements, placed in protein powders, protein bars and drinks. You can find collagen almost anywhere. But why is that? What’s the fuss all about?
Collagen is one of the largest proteins found in your body and serves many vital purposes. From healthy hair and nail growth, improving your skin’s elasticity, reducing the production of wrinkles and cellulite to supporting healthy joint, gut and bone health — collagen can have a large impact on the way you look and feel. To learn more about collagen and it’s effects on the skin we sat down with Woodside Licensed Esthetician Trina Blake to learn more.
In your own words, can you explain what collagen is and what it does for the body?
Trina : We all love collagen– it is crucial to obtaining healthy, supple skin. Your skin is comprised of roughly 80% collagen, so it plays a large role in the way your skin looks and ages. This wrinkle preventing protein occurs naturally in our bodies and is the structural net of the skin thus it is responsible for keeping the skin plump and youthful but also resilient and elastic. What we don’t love about collagen is that it starts depleting in the skin after the age of 20. After that, a person will start to produce about one percent less collagen in their skin each year. Over the years as the collagen begins to degrade, the skin becomes thinner and begins to sag, form wrinkles and become lackluster or dull. Because of these aging related issues, collagen facial treatments are hugely popular with those focused on anti-aging.
What are the benefits of implementing collagen into your skin routine and treatments?
Trina: I am huge on collagen and emphasize the amazing results my clients will receive when I upgrade it into their facials. A collagen treatment is designed to restore the depleted collagen in your face and rejuvenate your skin. External sources of collagen not only reinforce the skin, they also slow down the aging process by replenishing your body’s natural collagen. Receiving regular facials with collagen will lead to your skin having a more attractive and radiant glow. Clients should be able to see immediate results, leaving with replenished, hydrated and dewy skin – perfect for the winter months when most people are battling dry skin — but ongoing use of collagen will have the most impact, especially with battling signs of aging. Collagen facials will reduce the appearance of your pores, diminish redness, plump fines lines and wrinkles, and restore luminosity to your skin. Additionally, it will help to slow down the degradation of your skins exiting collagen.
How does The Spa at Woodside utilize collagen in its services?
Trina: Woodside Spa’s most popular facial is the customized peel and collagen treatment. After the skin is thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated, an intense hydrating gel is applied to the face then layered with strips of pure, freeze-dried, collagen. These strips are then adhered to the skin with a warm compress which allows the client to feel a satisfying sensation of them melting into your skin. The collagen treatment lasts twenty minutes and is at the end of the facial. While it sits, you get to relax with a soothing neck, shoulder and arm massage accompanied with hot steamed towels and aromatherapy. Once the mask is removed, a hydrophilic layer is left on the skin, making the skin hydrated, plumped, and luminous. All my clients absolutely LOVE our collagen treatments and rave about their results.
